The KwaZulu Natal Midlands is just made for adventure biking – there are so many back roads to be explored, coffee shops to be sampled and even the odd craft beer brewery for those that enjoy it. Pat and I decided to take the back roads to Cramond the other day, heading out from Howick in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands on the P414 towards the Karkloof, turning right onto the P526 past the Karkloof Club that took us to Cramond.
The rode is pretty good and it takes you down the escarpment through gum and pine plantations with stunning views over the lowlands. We took it easy – what’s the rush – and returned along the same route ending up at the Karkloof Falls back near Howick for a chill under the pines.
If you fancy something a little longer, instead of turning back , go all the way to the P33 towards Greytown, then left onto the P149 and left again when you reach the P150, still staying on the P149. Turn left again onto the P141 which will take you back to Howick.
