Dispatches from Afar #1

This Dispatch from Afar #1 just in from Roger and Pat who are enjoying some “bike time” in the Western Cape.

Hi Bruce

We’ve been down in Sanbona Wildlife Reserve shooting stills and movies for them and now we are heading to George for a few meetings. We had the good sense to stick the Honda CRF250L on the trailer and bring it along with us and managed to get a ride in this afternoon.

Our first ride was from Calitzdorp in the Little Karoo where we are staying at Anna Sophia Cottages (quite quirky, reasonably priced and comfortable)

We took the road to Groenfontein which took us up to the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains. Wow, what an amazing ride, varying from slow riding, twisty turnies to much faster, good gravel that was great fun.

The scenery was simply stunning and we passed little restaurants, art galleries, farms and the delightful looking Groenfontein Guest Farm. Alas we won’t be able to stay there on this trip but will most certainly bear it in mind for the future.

We eventually popped out on Route 62 some 12km to the east of Calitzdorp and wound up the CRF250L for the run into town. We got there in no time at all but really, the joy is on the dirt roads.

We wandered down the road looking for something to eat for dinner and found ourselves at the Zamani’s Grill . “Do you have babootie”? we asked. Hell, when in Rome… “Yes we do…” And it was delicious, made even better by the glass of local Boplaas Cape Ruby Port on the house.

We’ll be back. Just love it here!

Latest Update:

Got this from Roger this morning:

Die Handelshuis in Calitzdorp - a wonderful restaurant with a very friendly cat.

After a delicious breakfast at Die Handelshuis in Calitzdorp we found our way to Boplaas Family Vinyard, the producers of that rather fine Ruby Port that we had at Zamani’s last night. There we parted with hard earned cash and were presented with a few bottles of the port, some Stoepsit white and a a couple of bottles of Merlot. Awesome people to deal with and they offer some great deals on wine, port, whisky and brandy. Check them out!
